Sponsorship Tuition Parents Attend a Meeting
Fifteen Sponsorship Tuition parents received a school report of their children’s academic and social welfare at a meeting held on July 23rd, 2010 at CCP’s Community Center, Kawangware. Katie Herbst and Tiffany Spooner, visiting students from Azusa Pacific University, California USA also attended the meeting and empowered parents on child sex education. Grace Osendi and Beryne Odhiambo, the Sponsorship Tuition Teachers, gave a school report which included class attendance, punctuality, discipline and academic work. They called upon parents to cooperate and unite with them in ensuring that their children’s academic and social welfare improves. Benard Okoth, the Educational Site Manager emphasized the need for parents ensuring children attend the Sponsorship Tuition program. The teachers also responded to questions from parents. On the same day, parents led by Katie and Tiffany, were divided into four groups and discussed ways on how to educate their children about sex. Children could be educated through games, story telling, and enquiries on what the child knows about sex and begin from there. The parents said that child sex education was a challenge as it was previously a taboo in African set up discussing such topic with children, a view that has changed in the modern society. Katie advised parents to educate their children without fear failure to which “the world will teach them.” The Sponsorship Tuition program helps sponsored children improve in their academic performance. The children are tutored in English, Mathematics, and Social Studies subjects as per the Kenya Education Curriculum. The lessons are held from Monday to Friday at two venues: Community Center and Free Pentecostal Church, Kawangware. There are two sessions; from 2:00pm – 4:00pm for ages 4 – 9 year olds (Preschool – Level 3) and from 4:00pm – 6:30pm for the 10 – 12 year olds (Level 4 – Level 6). Children are allocated a venue according to the distance from their school and home.
