HIV/AIDS & Children
Guardians on July 3, 2010 were informed of the threat of HIV/AIDS to the children at a training held at Full Gospel Church, Kawangware. Rhodah Njue, a HIV/AIDS trainer, said that children were either infected or affected and therefore the need for parents to educate their children about causes of HIV/AIDS. Guardians pointed out premarital sex, wife inheritance, extra marital affairs, having many sexual partners, drug abuse leading to loose morals, and poverty as some of the elements that contributed to the spread of HIV/AIDS. Rhodah noted that some parents die of AIDS leaving children affected, infected, vulnerable or orphaned. The children that lack support from the relatives or society are exposed to dangers such as child labor, child abuse, trauma, rape, mistreatment, poverty, street life, early marriages and prostitution. Exposure to sex increased chances of the spread of HIV/AIDS to these children. Guardians were advised to: discus openly the causes of HIV/AIDS with their children, create comfortable and friendly environment to their children so that they can open up their issues in relation to AIDS, set rules for expected behavior, discourage boy-girl sexual relationship among children, practice Christian values, act as role models by avoiding extra or pre marital sex. After the training, each family received a bag of food.
