Personal Hygiene and STDs
Kawangware guardians refreshed their memories on basic hygiene procedures and prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) at a training held on April 10th, 2010 at the Free Pentecostal Church, Kawangware. Jane Owino, facilitator from NAWEPO reminded guardians the importance of cleaning their hands before handling food, washing vegetables and fruits before cooking or eating. Cooked food was also to be covered with a lid after cooling. Body hygiene involved showering everyday, cleaning of inner wear, shaving armpits and pubic areas. Jane emphasized the importance of hanging underwear in the sun or warm light to kill germs. After the tea break, Jane covered the types and causes of STDs such as Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Candidiasis, AIDS, Clamidia and Herpes. Some of the ramifications of the STDS included barrenness, mental retardation of newborns, miscarriage, cervical cancer, and a progression of HIV status to AIDS. Also, the diseases brought about shame and stress to the sick. However, she pointed out that most of the STDs were curable if a person went to the hospital in time. In the fight against the diseases, Jane urged guardians to open and discuss issues of sex with their spouses as well as children, seek medical help as a couple to avoid re-infection, faithfulness to one sexual partner and use a condom. Thereafter, each family received a bag of food for the month.
