Sponsorship Tuition Children’s Outing
A group of 32 Sponsorship Tuition program children on April 9th, 2010 visited the Children Traffic and the Luna Parks both situated at the Nairobi Uhuru Park. At the Children Traffic Park, the group learnt about pedestrian and cyclist road safety rules. Some of the accidents were caused by pedestrians. The traffic officer pointed out habits such as engaging a driver in a conversation while driving, boarding or alighting a moving vehicle and lack of use of safety belts as some of the ways pedestrians caused accidents. Pedestrians’ road crossing safety points included Zebra crossing, traffic lights, underground tunnel, a straight road and police controlled traffic points. The traffic officer reiterated the rule of crossing the road as “Look right, look left, look right again and when the road is clear, cross the road quickly but not running.” To the cyclists, children were advised to wear helmets and reflective clothing. At the same time, cyclists were to keep to the left, use hand signals and observe all pedestrians road crossing safety points. The group also learnt the A, B, D, E, F’s of crossing the road being Always, Be, Careful, Don’t, Ever, Forget. The group proceeded to the Luna Park where children had fun riding three types of swings as well as bouncing on the castle. Later on the children went to Uhuru Park and ended the day by riding boats.
