HIV/AIDS and Behavior Change
The Ngando Training on “HIV/AIDS & Behavior Change” took place on March 13, 2010 at Free Pentecostal Church. The training facilitated by Rhoda Njue, HIV/AIDS trainer and specialist covered the causes of the continuous spread of HIV/AIDS and the need for lifestyle changes to stop its further spread. The guardians pointed out ignorance, infidelity, poverty, bitterness, cultural beliefs such as witchcraft, cultural practices such as circumcision and wife inheritance as factors that still continued to contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS. Rhoda pointed out that Kenya had greatly reduced in HIV/AIDS stigma through the use of awareness campaigns and introduction of sex education in schools. She informed guardians that with good use of Anti-Retrovirals and a good diet, a HIV person could live for another 40 years with the disease. To the HIV positive women, Rhoda advised them against pregnancy as this pre-disposed them to re-infection from their partners and also reduced immunity in their bodies. However, if a woman desired to get pregnant, she advised that one should consult with her doctor and get advice on when and the necessary steps needed to carry a successful pregnancy to full term. After delivery, the mother could either decide to breastfeed for 6months without weaning the child or wean the baby from the start without breastfeeding. In addressing behavior change to arrest the spread of HIV/AIDS, measures such as: parents taking lead in educating their children about sex, balanced diet, consistency in the use of ARVs, delivery at the hospital incases of pregnancy, faithfulness to one partner, use of condoms to promote safe sex and to prevent further re-infection. After the training, each family received a bag of food for the month.
