Guardians’ Training on ‘Adolescence’
Kawangware guardians training empowering guardians on how to handle adolescents occurred on February 6th 2009 at Full Gospel Church, Kawangware. Margaret Mbugua, the Medical Site Manager, described adolescence as a transitional stage of physical and mental human development that occurs between childhood and adulthood. Some of the transition changes in adolescents include rapid body changes like masculinity in boys while girls add in body weight and are often concerned with their body image, notable mood changes known as mood swings, sexual desire which usually begins to intensify along with showing tenderness towards the opposite sex, confusion about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ thus the need for guidance from parents. At the same time, separation between parents and adolescents also occur. Adolescents view close relationships with their peers as more important and influential than their parents hence spend more time with friends. They show parents less attention and become rude in demand for independence and freedom. Because of peer pressure, they may sometimes indulge in activities not deemed socially acceptable such as smocking, drugs or robbery. This leads to withdrawal on the side of parents. However, adolescents still need love and acceptance from their parents. Parents need to encourage adolescents in participatory developments such as athletic, artistic abilities, academic or musical talents that may enable them use their energy positively and develop good self esteem. Parents also need to understand the adolescents and enlighten them about the changes they are undergoing. “Adolescence is a challenging period for both parents and children,” Margaret noted. She therefore encouraged parents not only to seek help and advice from friends but also present their children before God. After the training, each sponsored family received a bag of food for their families.
